Fuel element cladding embrittling process

The State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom within the frames of the Federal target program “Nuclear and Radioactive Safety” is developing  new innovative method for the WWER  and LWGR spent fuel processing. The Demonstration Center for nuclear waste recycling will be constructed. Within the framework of this program by the order of SverdNIIchemmash OJSC the Institute of High Temperature Electrochemistry UB RAS have accomplished research and development of the general production phase of the nuclear waste recycling method. As the result, the operation parameters of gas-thermal fuel cell cladding treatment were defined; the gas environment composition and temperature regimes for fuel cell cladding embrittling were detected. The technological parameters of the gas-thermal fuel cell treatment were successfully tested on the test bench at SverdNIIchemmash OJSC using the FRA full-scale samples.

Advantages:

  1. Low operating temperature of the gas-thermal treatment.
  2. Low power consumption.
  3. Remote control and complete process automatic performance are possible.

The works are performed by the order of SverdNIIchemash OJSC.
